League Update #1
OK Curlers, here's change #1! Due to Jerome and Justine not being able to make it tomorrow night (3/7/08), and being on the same team, I moved Justine to Bob Kuhl's team and Pam to Jerome's team in order for both teams to have 3 players. Also, JoJo informed me he will not be there on 3/28/08 (spare anyone?).
See you all tomorrow night, and don't forget to bring your check book to pay the rink! (cheap cheap!)

Mixed Doubles / Pairs Curling
As mentioned by Marko, WCC is introducing "mixed doubles" during this session. We don't have enough female curlers this season so lets call it as "pairs curling" for now. Art and I played last year in San Jose and we thought it was fun, involving so much strategies. Curling purist hates it but for a small club struggling to attract participants, mixed pair could be a savior. The unusual aspect of the game is the placing of two rocks prior to each end. Here's a few rules from World Curling Federation:
1. Prior to the start of every end, one team shall instruct the game umpire to place their team’s stationary stone (1), and their opponent’s stationary stone (1), in either position A or B:
a) A stone bisecting the center line, midway between the hog line and the front of the house; or
b) A stone on the back half of the button, bisecting the center line and touching the tee line.
2. The team having the decision on the placement of the stationary stones shall be:
(a) Unless predetermined, the teams opposing each other in the game shall use a coin toss to determine which team has the decision in the first end. (Note that at the World Mixed Double Championships, this will be determined by the Draw Shot Distance)
(b) Following the first end, the team that lost the end will have the decision on the placement.
(c) If an end is blanked, the team that did not deliver the last stone in that end shall have the decision on placement in the next end.
3. The team whose stationary stone is placed in the position in front of the house shall deliver first in that end, and the team whose stationary stone is placed in the house shall deliver the second stone of that end.

By the way, world mixed doubles will start this weekend in Finland. Here's the official website.
And here's the mixed doubles intro video released by the WCF:

Spring Curling Session
Hello WCC Curlers!
Our short session starts this Friday, March 7, 2008! I'm responsible for the team make up and scheduling for this 6 week session. Please direct any concerns to me at my email, or cell or home phone.
Attached you'll find the teams and schedule, along with a few guidelines and useful information.
If I missed anyone that still wants to curl, CALL ME ASAP! We'll work it all out!
Basically we have 5 teams. That leaves 1 team without an opponent. To keep that team curling each week, they will be curling the "Mixed Doubles" format game, which is a 2 person team. So your team will be broken down into 2 teams and curl against each other!!! In case you're not familiar with this new format (I haven't experienced it myself), I'll have some basic "Cheat Sheets" for everyone at the club.
There will be no playoffs or tie-breakers if any teams end in a tie as this is only a six week session and is the last curling we'll do here at WCCC until the big CRUSH bonspiel on Labor Day weekend!!! So let's all enjoy these last couple weeks of curling!
Cost is $120 for the entire 6 week session, which if you plan on making all 6 weeks is a discount of $25. Weekly cost is $25. Please be ready to pay at the door this Friday.
I'm sure I'm forgetting something, so please don't hesitate to call me with any concerns at all...
See you Friday or talk to sooner!
